The socket includes a housing that has a top surface and a recess that extends downwardly from the top surface towards the bottom end of the socket. The recess is formed and dimensioned to receive the starting housing of the compact fluorescent lamp. Provided on the top surface is a plurality of spaced spaced holes, each orifice being positioned to receive one of the end pins of the fluorescent lamp. Adapter is designed to connect to compact fluorescent lamps that have different types of base configuration with the socket. Adapter includes a base from which a starter housing and a plurality of end pins extend downwards. The starter housing is positioned to be telescopically received by the socket recess. The starter housing is surrounded by the end pins which are positioned at a distance from each other so as to be inserted into the spaced spaced holes in the socket. In one embodiment, the base may include a recess for receiving the starting housing of the compact fluorescent lamp and a plurality of spaced spaced holes. Each hole is positioned to receive one of the end pins of the fluorescent lamp. In another embodiment, the base may have a secondary adapter attached to it for use with the fluorescent lamp.
