This invention describes the antiviral action against the cytomegalovirus (CMV) of phenolic compounds belonging to the general structural formula A as well as alcoholic extracts isolated from the plant Platanus orientalis L. and the Greek genus of the plant Ebenus. These phenolic compounds are natural and semisynthetic products which are isolated from extracts of the above plants with alcoholic solvents as well as two synthetic phenolic compounds for comparative study. The semisynthetics are the acetylated derivatives of natural products.
