A catalyst for hydroprocessing heavy feedstock oil comprising a porous alumina carrier having supported thereon 5 to 10% by weight, in terms of molybdenum, of molybdenum oxide or sulfide and 1 to 3% by weight, in terms of nickel and/or cobalt, of an oxide or sulfide of nickel and/or cobalt as active metallic species each based on the total weight of the catalyst, wherein the catalyst has a total pore volume of 0.5 to 1.0 ml/g as measured by a nitrogen desorption method with the volume of pores having a pore size of 150 to 300 A being not less than 60% of the total pore volume. The catalyst, exhibits high activity in hydroprocessing, such as desulfurization and denitrogenation, and hydrocracking. When used in the stage following a guard catalyst for demetallization, the catalyst of the invention produces an outstanding effect in removing residual metallic component thereby to postpone the life of the catalyst used in the latter stage.
