The reader is a hand-held unit (1), with a slot (4) at the front into which the smart card (5) is inserted. Circuits within the unit interrogate the circuit on the card. The digital data obtained is converted to analogue speech signals which are announced from loudspeaker (7). The unit is powered by internal batteries (3) and operated by a single push button (6).
