The valuable object, e.g. a pendulum clock, has an electronic circuit (2) attached to it. A loop (4) of conductive cable is wired through a ring attached to the wall (6). If the loop is severed, the electronic chip transmits a signal via the mobile phone network to a selected phone. The signal will alert the phone user to the fact that the object is being tampered with.
