The step unit (1, 1) has a frame which can be rotated about a horizontal axis (13) in order to lower the steps into the pool or raise them out of it into a vertical position, or alternatively the frame can be swung sideways in and out of the pool by rotating it about an axis extending upwards at an angle. The step frame is also used as a guide for a chair, forming a chairlift to lift disabled people in and out of the pool.
