The active life of a fork of a forklift truck is extended by fixing a small plate (8) of wearproof material to the underside of the fork and extending at least to the vicinity of the fork heel (6). After fixture it is the small plate which will be subject to wear and not the fork. Once completely or partially worn, the small plate can be removed, discarded and replaced by a new small plate. To remove it, preferably it and the heel are heated with the aid of a gas burner to 100 degrees Celsius. The plate is of metal, preferably XAR 500. Preferably, the small plate has a thickness (dp) which is equal to at least 10 per cent of the thickness (do) of the fork underside by means of a double-sided adhesive band, glue, or cement.
