The cosmetic or pharmaceutical composition contains a pharmaceutically or cosmetically acceptable medium, an active agent with an irritant side effect and at least one retinoic acid inhibitor provided that active agent is not retinoic acid or a retinoid. The composition is useful for treating sensitive skin and/or acute cutaneous damage induced by UV radiation. The inhibitor is preferably a retinoic acid receptor (RAR) antagonist.
