A wastewater system consists of a moving bed biofilm reactor 10, a fixed bed aeration zone 20, 30, and a settlement zone. Liquid exiting from reactor 10 and aeration zones 20, 30 is routed upwards through conduits 15, 25, so that fluid flows downwardly through the reactor and aeration zones.
