Fibroblast growth factor homologous factor (FHFs) peptides and nucleic acids that encode them and therapeutic and diagnostic methods for cell proliferative disorders

A substantially pure fibroblast growth factor homologous factor (FHF) polypeptide comprising a segment of at least five consecutive amino acids that are conserved in the amino acid sequences of FHF-1, FHF2, FHF-3 and FHF-4. Also disclosed is a FHF-specific nucleic acid probe that specifically hybridizes to a nucleic acid encoding a FHF polypeptide, but does not hybridize to a nucleic acid encoding a fibroblast growth factor. The use of a reagent that depresses the activity of the FHF polypeptide as a medicament for treating cell proliferative disorders and a method for detecting cell proliferative disorders are also disclosed.
