Microlens array on face of hard copy image creates impression of pixel depth for viewer

A display device includes a printed or photographic image 32 made up of pixels and an array of fixed microlenses 33, each microlens corresponding to a pixel of the image, overlying and permanently applied to the image. Each microlens has a fixed focus and the array of lenses is thermoformed or molded into a plastic sheet. The focal length of each microlens is chosen to portray the pixel underlying the lens at the correct apparent distance at which the pixel is designed to appear to the viewer of the image.
