A crash attenuation impact head 50, for use with a rail element (guard rail 14) comprises an inlet 60 for element 14, an outlet for discharging element 14, a kinker beam 51 attached to inlet 60 and a kinking deflector plate 68 attached within the head and extending from inlet 60 to the outlet. The plate has a multiplicity of discrete intersecting angular faces whereby, upon impact, energy is dissipated in incremental amounts through the sequential kinking of the element 4 as it passes by beam 51, through head 50, and out the outlet. A highway crash attenuation system includes head 50 and one or more horizontally extending rail elements 14, the head, for engaging an impacting vehicle, slidingly positioned at a first end over a first end portion of the element or elements.
