The invention relates to a starch-based thermoplastic mixture, obtained by preparing and mixing A) 100 weight parts of at least one cationic starch a) and at least one anionic starch b), B) 0-400 weight parts of a polymer material which can be thermoplastically processed and is different from A), C) water in a sufficient quantity for plasticising the mixture, D) at least one plasticiser in a quantity of 10 weight parts - half the sum of the weight parts of A) and B), and E) optionally, up to ((A) + B)) weight parts of other usual additives, the water content of constituents A) and B) having been corrected to zero by calculation. The invention also relates to the use of the inventive mixture for producing shaped bodies and films.
