PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF PHENOL The improved process for producing phenol, acetone anda-methylstyrene in the cumene-phenol process comprisingcumene hydroperoxide, cumene and dimethylphenylcarbinol inthe presence of sulfuric acid has the steps of decomposingthe cumene hydroperoxide in a back mixing reactor with theyield of [err]-methylstyrene as produced fromdimethylphenylcarbinol being controlled and the step offorming [err]-methylstyrene in such a way that the reactionmixture produced in the first step is supplied into a plug-flow reactor after acetone is added to said reactionmixture. The process is capable of consistent productionof phenol and [err]-methylstyrene in high yields under mildreaction conditions.
