The spectrometer comprises an electron excitation source or a pulsed excitation source for generating ions from a sample, an electrostatic energy analysis system with an associated (quasi-)elliptical electrostatic system, and a detector. Energy and mass spectrometry data are obtained from a sample by constructing the electrostatic energy analysis system from two identical, axial symmetrical analyser plates with a quasi-elliptical electrostatic system placed between the inverted path sequence device in between the plates. The total flight through the spectrometer for particles with a given mass and energy is independent of the angle at which the particles leave the sample.
