A process for packaging tea bags (14) in a heat-sealable barrier film (12) consists of a number of steps. In a first step, a narrow web of laminated barrier film (12) is continuously folded in half lengthwise. In a second step, individual sealed packages (tea bags) (14) are inserted between the superimposed halves of the folded film (12). In a third step, the superimposed films are sealed transversely ahead of package (14). At the same time, the longitudinal film edges are sealed along a portion of their length. In a fourth step, the films are sealed transversely behind package (14), and at the same time the longitudinal edge seal is completed. In a fifth step, the completed package is severed from film web (12) by cutting through the transverse seal.
