A block (CONCMACHINE4) recognises a possible concatenation state on the basis of the indications received from four independent circuits (POINTINT) that process Administrative Unit (AU4) pointers. The block decides if a concatenation state exists, if there are four independent, non-concatenated AU4's or if an illegal state exists. A circuit with succeeding blocks (CONC MACHINE16, CONC MACHINE64) enables automatic recognition of payload concatenation. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a circuit for improving the pointer processing in SDH frames; (b) a computer program comprising code to perform the steps of the method (c) and a computer readable medium containing a program code.
