Non-human mammalian. cell lines which expressthe major human rhinovirus receptor protein. The celllines are prepared by gene transfection of human DNA,such as HeLa cell DNA, into non-human mammalian cells,such as mouse cells. Primary transfectants can betransfected into further non-human mammalian cells toprovide secondary transfectants. Cloning of secondarytransfectants yields cell lines that exhibit enhancedexpression of the surface receptor protein. Thetransfectant cell lines provide a means for cloning themajor human rhinovirus receptor protein gene andimmunogens for producing antibodies, particularlymonoclonal antibodies, against the receptor protein. Ageneral method for screening drug candidates for theirability to block ligand binding to a human cell surfacereceptor protein is also provided.
