A modular expandable digital single-stage switchingnetwork in ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technology for afast packet-switched transmission of information, having asingle type of switching module with storage function, whichcan be operated in two different operating modes (M1, M2) asa pre-switching module or as a final switching module, and hasN first inputs, N expansion inputs, N first outputs and Nexpansion outputs. A first operating mode (M1) realizes thefunction of the switching module as the final switching modulefor the switching of N first input lines and N expansion inputlines to N first output lines, and a second operating mode(M2) realizes the function of the switching module as thepre-switching module for the pre-switching of N first input linesand for connecting through N expansion input lines. Theswitching module functioning as the pre-switching module canread in 2N packets simultaneously and read out N packetssimultaneously. The switching module functioning as thepre-switching module processes with its header information filteronly a part of the header information of data packets forswitching the packets to the respective switching matrixcolumn, so that the lines of the matrix column are shared bypackets for this matrix column. To avoid so-called packetovertaking, the chronological sequence of packets arriving ineach case on one of the N first input lines of the switchingmodule functioning as pre-switching module is replaced fromcase to case by a spatial ordering on the N first output linesof the switching module functioning as pre-switching module.The switching module functioning as final switching modulecan read in 2N packets simultaneously. The switching modulefunctioning as the final switching module processes with itsheader information filter another part of the headerinformation for the final switching to a matrix output.
