A screen is mounted in an apparatus for contactingparticulate solids with a fluid. The apparatus comprisesan elongate column for holding a bed of particulatesolids for contact with a fluid, t:he column beingdesigned to be oriented substantially vertically in useand having a fluid inlet near the bottom for admitting afluid into the column and a fluid outlet near the top forpermitting the fluid to. exit the column after passingupwardly through a bed of particulate solids in thecolumn. The purpose of the screen is to screen solidsfrom the fluid exiting the column through the fluidoutlet. The screen comprises a plurality of verticalscreen wires. and the screen is located within the columnsuch that all of the fluid passing through the columnpasses through the screen and thence through the fluidcutlet. Each pair of adjacent vertical screen wiresdefines a substantially vertical screen slottherebetween. The opening of each vertical screen slotat the surface of the screen which is upstream in thesense of a fluid flowing through the column. passingthrough the screen. and exiting through the outlet duringoperation of the column, has a width suitable forscreening solids from the exiting fluid and has a lengthwhich is substantially greater than its width.
