A data processing system supports preparation of a softwareapplication by coordinating the efforts of a metaprogrammerand a plurality of system users responsible to themetaprogrammer. The data processing system includes aplurality of workstations, each having a display and a userinput device. Each of the workstations is connected toshared memory for access to data objects stored therein.One data object is a blank project container which includesa plurality of subject objects relating to phases in aproduct life for a software application. The metaprogrammeris authorized to replicate a blank project container toprovide a project specified container available in sharedmemory to system users selected to work on a particularsoftware application. The project specific containerincludes a plurality of subject objects relating to phasesin a product life for the software application package. Inaddition, the project specified container includes adirectory to templates for use in creating standardsoftware modules and functions selected for use ingenerating code for storage in data objects. Data objectsare stored in memory categorized within subject objects ofthe project container. An index is generated as data objectsare created. Such an index is located with each sub-objectwith each subject object. Lastly, private instances of theproject container are generated relating to users. Eachprivate instance includes a subset o~ the objects within theproject container, selected on the basis of usefulness tothe tasks assigned to this particular user.
