The present invention provides an apparatus andmethod for achieving bit rate distance products on theorder of 200 Tbits/skm in non-soliton opticalcommunication using optical phase conjugation. Theapparatus and method utilize phase conjugation andadjustments of in-line amplifier number, spacing, and/oroutput power in order to compensate for the interactionbetween first order dispersion and fiber nonlinearitydispersion effects in an optical fiber span. The presentinvention provides additional techniques for adjustingsystem parameters, such as dispersion-length products offirst and second portions of the fiber span, in order tocompensate for changes in first order dispersion resultingfrom non-zero second order dispersion. The method andapparatus also provide an improved multi-channel opticalphase conjugation system design.
