A system for processing/accessingand representation of large volumes of datacomprises one or more input interfaceswhich under the control of an internaltraffic control cenlre can be connectedwith an external control centre for thetransfer of those data which have to beprocessed/accessed. The transfer of datacan be performed in a telecommunicationnetwork with high transfer capacity or bymeans of a replaceable storage medium.Data which have to be processed/accessedcan exist in encoded or compressed form.In the latter case a decoder provided inthe system will decode the data and passthem on for display or playback on anappropriate display or playback unit. Thesystem further comprises a user controlinterface and an internal control/mixingdevice for control of the system's functionsand possibly communication with anexternal control centre. The system issuitable for use in a video on demandsystem with a pay-per-view arrangementor in general information systems withpayment on ordering or payment per item,document or file.
