A personal communications system enables theoperator to simultaneously transmit voice and datacommunication to a remote site. The personalcommunications system is equipped with two telephoneline interfaces to allow connection between two remotesites. The connection between the first remote siteand the local site may operate in a voice over datacommunications mode to simultaneously send compressedvoice and data. The connection between the local siteand a second site is a voice only connection allowingthe first remote site to talk to the second remotesite without breaking the data communicationconnection between the first site and the local site.The second remote site amy be a public telephonenetwork. The communication between the first remotesite and the second remote site through the local sitemay also be a data communication connection, or it mayalso be a voice over data communication connection.
