NAVIGATION SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR VIEWING A 3D DATA LANDSCAPE

A navigation system and method for viewing a data landscape in aninformation visualization system employs constraints and positions for therenderingviewpoint which are defined relative to a bounding box enclosing objectswithin a volume ofinterest. The bounding box is resized to reflect changes in objects within thevolume ofinterest including the addition or deletion of objects and/or the resizing ofobjects. Thebounding box is also correspondingly repositioned whenever the volume ofinterest isrepositioned. Constraints and/or positions defined relative to the boundingbox are updatedaccordingly and are employed to control the movement and re-orientation of therenderingviewpoint within the volume of interest by the user. The user can selectand/or define othervolumes of interest within the data landscape, the bounding box for the entirelandscape beingthe largest possible bounding box and the default volume of interest, andselect predefinedpositions and orientations for the rendering viewpoint and/or store selectedpositions and/ororientations for future use.
