The invention relates to a method of changing theencoding level of digital data transmitted between atransmitter and a receiver at a constant rate, saidencoding level being determined as a function of thequality of the signal received by said receiver, anencoding level of rank 0 being defined as providing thehighest degree of protection for said transmitted dataand an encoding level of rank n-1 as providing a lowestdegree of protection to said transmitted data. Accordingto the invention, the method consists, during a fixedtime of non-zero length, in preventing a changeover froman encoding level of rank n, where 0 ~ m n-1, to anencoding level of rank m+q, where 0 m+q ~ n-1, andwhere q is positive, after said received signal qualitycorresponds to encoding at the level m+q.
