COMMUNICATION LINE TERMINATING UNIT, MODEM AND CENTRAL OFFICE UNIT WHEREIN THE LINE TERMINATING UNIT IS USED

A communication line terminating module (TM), capable to receive andtransmit telephone signals and digital data comprises a transmitting path (DP,COM, DA, F, LD, H) for the telephone signals and digital data, and a receivingpath (H, LR, F', AD, SEP, DP) for the telephone signals and digital data. Thetransmitting path (DP, COM, DA, F, LD, H) includes the cascade coupling ofdigital processing means (DP), digital combining means (COM) for combiningthe telephone signals and said digital data in the digital domain, digital toanalogue conversion means (DA), filter means (F), line driver means (LD) andline coupling means (H). The receiving path (H, LR, F', AD, SEP, DP) on theotherhand includes the cascade coupling of line coupling means (H), gain controlmeans (LR), filter means (F'), analogue to digital conversion means (AD),digitalseparating means (SEP) for separating the telephone signals from said digitaldata in the digital domain, and digital processing means (DP). Thecommunication line terminating module (TM) does not include a bulky POTS(Plain Old Telephone Service) splitter with analogue filters.
