This invention relates to a general method for detecting pathogenic strains ofbacteria which harbour a type III secretion system. More particularly, thisinvention relates to the methods as applied to the pathogen iBordetellapertussis/i. Furthermore, the invention relates to newly identifiedpolynucleotides within these regions, virulent polypeptides encoded by themand to the use of such polynucleotides and polypeptides, and to theirproduction. More particularly the polynucleotides and polypeptides of thepresent invention relate to the virulent effector proteins associated with thetype III secretion system of iBordetella pertussis/i, which areparticularly suitable for vaccine purposes.
