This invention provides a polynucleotide fragment of S. meliloti USDA 1170 that confers on other strains of S. meliloti transfected with it the ability to efficiently nodulate the legume M. laciniata. This polynucleotide is useful in methods of increasing the nodulation efficiency by commercial strains of S. meliloti of agriculturally important crops such as alfalfa.
