A scrubbing process and apparatus for a pulp mill in which total reduced sulphur (TRS) compounds are scrubbed from non-condensible effluent gases (NCG). A scrubbing tower is fed by the NCG and by suitable alkaline liquid for chemical interaction with and binding to TRS compounds in the effluent gases. Packing within the towr disperses the suitable alkaline liquid into fine droplets. A comparatively high interior pressure and suitably high interior temperature are provided, and droplet dispersion is increased by means of increased packing height and diameter of the packing section and packing efficiency. Consequently the chemical interaction between the suitable alkaline liquid and TRS compounds in the NCG is comparatively increased whilst saturation humidity of the effluent gases exiting the tower is comparatively decreased, and evaporative cooling of the suitable alkaline liquid within the tower is comparatively reduced.
