The invention concerns a method for optimising water supply to a cultivated field using a rotary gun-sprinkler (1), the gun being carried by a mobile carriage (3) and connected to one end of a water supply pipe (5) which is unwound in the field and then wound from a reel (7) while the gun (1) sweeps across an irrigating sector with a specific shape. The method is characterised in that it consists in varying the shape of the angular sector swept across by the gun (1) during irrigation.
