The invention relates to a device for recording cross-sectional images through a human or animal body. Said device comprises an image recording means, a holding means on which the human or animal body can be fixated, and a control means for controlling the holding means and/or the image recording means in such a manner that the holding means and the image receiving means are displaced relative to one another. The invention is characterized in that the holding means is mechanically decoupled from the device during said relative displacement and that a position detecting means is provided for detecting the relative position between the holding means and the image recording means during the relative displacement. According to the invention, a holding means is used that is characterized by a control means for controlling the holding means in such a manner that the holding means and the image recording means are displaced relative to one another. Said control means is further provided with a device that interacts with a device on the image recording side to provide a position detecting means for detecting the relative position between the holding means and the image recording means. The inventive device further utilizes an image recording means that is characterized by a device that interacts with a device on the holding means side to provide a position detecting means for detecting the relative position between the holding means and the image recording means.
