A roadside beacon system in which a plurality of roadside antennas transmit data to vehicles passing closely adjacent. The transmitting antennas are mounted high above the sides of the roads and have a gain pattern directed obliquely downward. The mobile antennas on the cars have gain patterns directly upwardly.
