Disclosed is a fermentative method enabling the production of peat substitutes having characteristics similar to peat. By applying a treatment with enzymatic systems of lignolytic fungi, preferably oxidases, sealing is obtained by fostering the humidifying processes thereby eliminating harmful influences of substances contained in the original starting materials on plant growth. Mould formation is suppressed and N immobilization is lowered. The induced processes are optimized by various additives and in the presence of biocenoses.
