The laser (1) comprises amplifying element (2) with retroreflector (9), such as a corner cube lens, and mirror (19) providing reflective element, but with focussing lens (22) located in the laser assembly, providing focussed beam at entrance to optical fibre cable (20). Laser beam axis (26) is coincident with fibre axis (28) at point of entry to fibre core. The partially transparent exit mirror (19) may be placed in the fibre core by photo-inscription (of Bragg type) or by metallic deposit on the inner surface of the core.
