PURPOSE: A method is provided to eliminate a background using a relative brightness when eliminating a background of an image. CONSTITUTION: In the background eliminating method for eliminating a background of an input image comprising a background image or an area appointed by a background image, after assigning a main color element(R) of a background, a range of a relative brightness of a main color element with regard to color elements(G, B) except the assigned main color element is assigned. And an area existing in the range of the assigned relative brightness is eliminated. Each edge consisting of a polygon is classified into grounds indicating a right boundary and a left boundary, and then a minimum value and a maximum value of a reference axis of the polygon are determined. An active area is determined as an area where a background elimination function continues to be performed with regard to a reference axis from the minimum value to the maximum value. A pixel is assigned as a background and then is eliminated. A relative brightness of a main color element exists in a range for becoming the background.
