PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for calculating a motion vector of a control point in an image encoder is provided to conveniently obtain the motion vector using a separate vector quantization technology without a circulated and repeated searching operation. CONSTITUTION: The method for calculating a motion vector of a control point using a separate vector quantization technology comprises steps of calculating a motion vector of each image pixel block, defining a control point at a boundary of the image pixel blocks, setting a desired sized block area and dividing the block area into n numbers, quantizing a vector corresponding each block area to obtain each index, obtaining a motion vector of a control point. The apparatus for calculating a motion vector of a control point using a separate vector quantization technology comprises a frame memory(10) for storing the input image in a frame unit, a block matching algorithm processing portion(20) for inputting an image data from the frame memory to calculate the motion vector according to the block matching algorithm, a memory(30) for storing the motion vector calculated from the block matching algorithm, a code book(44-1) in which an output vector is stored corresponding to a desired input vector, vector quantizing portion. vector quantization decoder(42-1), an index matching portion(50), and a vector quantizing portion.
