PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for testing a channel modem in a satellite communication system is provided so that a system manager can easily check the communication status of a satellite communication system, especially the status of a channel modem executing the modulation and demodulation of data. CONSTITUTION: A tester(101), comprised of a test pattern data generation part(101A) and a data detection part(101B), is a device to test an operation state of the SDPs(Sound/Data Processors) of a channel modem. An ADPCM(Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) encoder(102) converts the PCM data supplied from the test pattern data generation part(101A) into ADPCM-coded data. A MUX(103) adds SOM(Start Of Message) data to the burst data supplied from the ADPCM encoder(102). An encoder(104) scrambles the data transmitted from the MUX(103) and outputs I and Q data. A TX synchronizer(105) adds a unique word and postamble data to the front and back ends of the data frame supplied from the encoder(104). The first switching part(106) switches the output direction of the burst data frame outputted from the TX synchronizer(105), based on a control signal supplied from a CUP(Channel Unit Processor)(68). In case that the SDPs are in a test mode, the burst data frame transmitted from the TX synchronizer(105) are outputted as the input data of the second switching part(107).
