PURPOSE: A system and a method for handling a software interrupt having an argument under passing are provided to increase a program efficiency of a multimedia processor system and a speed by generating the software interrupt through one instruction, and to increase a variety of a software interface by appointing a software interrupt handling routine. CONSTITUTION: A vector processor is operated in a run state or an idle state. When a multimedia multiprocessor system is reset(902), the vector processor is operated in the idle state(904). A control processor is allowed only to record and read a register in the vector processor in the idle state(906). The vector processor initializes registers of the vector processor(908). After this, the control processor executes STARTVP(START Vector Processor) instruction(910), and converts the idle state into the run state(911). When an exception condition is generated, the vector processor sends an interrupt request to the control processor in the idle state(916). The vector processor is in the idle state continuously until the control processor executes other STARTVP instruction(918). The control processor decides an exception characteristic by reading the registers of the vector processor(920), and handles an exception by a defined method(922). Next, the control processor initializes the registers of the vector processor again(924), and tries to execute the vector processor again(926).
