PURPOSE: A scalable binary shape coder and a method for the same are provided to obtain an original image of a desired resolution by converting easily resolution between layers with an interlace scan. CONSTITUTION: A scalable binary shape coder is used for obtaining shape information of various resolution by using one bit stream. Blocks of each sample number are divided by n and m, respectively if a conversion rate of an L-layer of a lower resolution to an L+1 layer of a higher resolution is not more than 2. A sampling process(203) for only data(206) of 2(n-m) number of the L+1 layer is performed. The sampled data of the L+1 layer correspond to (n-m) number of the L layer. The remaining data(207) of 2m-n number of the L+1 layer corresponds to data(210) of 2m-n of the L layer without the sampling process.
