The closer (1) is operated by a hand lever and an operating shaft (3) running in the longitudinal direction of the wagon. The shaft is connected to the closer by an operating rod (2). The rod is arranged so that when closed, it always adopts a pre-dead point position. The shaft has a torsion spring (16) which always exerts a closing force on the closer when closed. This means that the closer's forward edge (18) is sprung to create a seal against the saddle ridge (17) within the frame of the surfaces which are liable to wear.
