Modified nano-particulate transition metal or alloy colloids which are dispersible in organic solvents and/or water are produced by the reaction of a product obtained by reacting a group 6-11 transition metal compound with an organometallic compound or treating a pre-synthesized nano-particulate transition metal or alloy colloid with an organometallic compound with a modifier which has protolytic action, introduces C,C-, C,N- or C,O- multiple bonds or reacts with metal-carbon bonds via Lewis acid-base interactions.- DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Production of modified nano-particulate transition metal or alloy colloids which are dispersible in hydrophobic and/or hydrophilic organic solvents and/or water comprises the reaction, in situ or after isolation, of the product obtained by reacting a group 6-11 transition metal compound with an organometallic compound or treating a pre-synthesized nano-particulate transition metal or alloy colloid with an organometallic compound with an organic or inorganic modifier which has protolytic action, introduces C,C, C,N or C,O multiple bonds or reacts with metal-carbon bonds via Lewis acid-base interactions
