Alkyl-1H-1-pyrazolylmethanamine derivatives (I) are used as nitrification inhibitors for nitrogen fertilizers. Some (I) are new compounds. The use of thermally stable, low volatility alkyl-1H-1-pyrazolylmethanamines of formula (I) or their acid addition products (specifically with hydrochloric, sulfuric or phosphoric acid) is claimed as nitrification inhibitors for nitrogen fertilizers. R1-R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; A = NR4R5, morpholino, piperidino, 4,5-dihydro-5-methyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl or -(N(-Me)-CH2CH2)nR6; R4, R5 = 1-6C alkyl (optionally substituted by OH); R6 = polyethyleneimine terminal group; n = 100-1000 (preferably 500-600). Independent claims are included for: (1) (I) as new compounds, provided that A is other than morpholino or piperidino; and (2) the preparation of the new compounds (I).
