The method involves using an arrangement for which all control and, regulation and measurement functions are undertaken by a CNC controller that coordinates the entire process. Grinding tools (19) and lenses are held in a tool magazine that interacts with an extraction arrangement (4). The torque of the drive (9) for axial movement of the upper centering spindle (8) can be regulated in the W-axis, even when stationary, and it is also possible to automatically center lenses with a critical angle of less than 6 deg . For time saving and quality improvement during axis centering, the revolution rate of the centering spindles (7,8) forming the C-axis and/or the feed force of the upper centering spindle can be varied by evaluating the results of a laser measurement. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for centering optical lenses.
