The cover sheath (5) slides onto and encloses the knifeholder (4) so the radially projecting locking pin of the knifeholder engages a linear detent (8) round the inside of the sheath in the latching position with the knife (2) lying outside the cover sheath. The locking pin can be engaged with a second latching position to retract the knife back into the sheath. A linear sector (9) of the detent running along the line of the scalpel has short latching positions (10,11) at both ends of this sector (9) and projecting round the sheath and a spring strip (12) between the two latching positions adjoins the locking pin (13) during the pin movement. An external cover (6) slides onto the knifeholder (4) on the end facing the knife and a sleeve (7) of the sheath (5) between cover and knifeholder so the sleeve rides on this (4). The unsheathed distal end of the knifeholder carries a coding ring (14) showing use dates etc.
