The synchronous generator and/or motor has opposing rotor and stator windings, each having a given number of pole pairs, the stator windings supplied with AC voltages during the motor operating mode and providing induced AC voltages during the generator mode. The stator and rotor each have 2 windings (3,4 ; 5,6) with different numbers of pole pairs, the rotor windings connected to provide 2 rotating magnetic fields with different number of pole pairs rotating in opposite directions within the same space.
