A rain water drainage system for a road has a soak away channel (7) under the road (6) and is filled with a granular material to hold water. The soak away is surrounded by a sand filling (18) to enable water to soak away into the surrounding soil. The granular filling is sufficiently strong to support the road. The bottom of the soak away trench holds a sewer drain in a sand bed. The rain water drains (14) are fitted with a sand trap to prevent sand and silt being washed into the soak away and thereby clogging the system.
