The brake device has a brake element displaceably guided in a housing which is mounted on a fixed or movable part of the furniture. The brake element is mounted between an energy accumulator and the control element and is connected to same. The control element is formed as a detent element operated by an entrainment pin which is fixed on the other furniture part and interacts with the control element. Preferred Features: The detent element has a detent lug which in the tensioned state hangs from an end side of the housing. The brake element can be a friction brake with brake shoe.
