A procedure is described for controlling the primary air ratio of an atmospheric gas burner with at least one mixing tube (3) against whose entry a gas nozzle is directed. The state of the combustion is detected and according to it, the entry or exit cross-section of the mixing tube is adjusted. The state of the combustion is detected by an ionisation current being measured in the flame region. In the exhaust gas, the concentration of oxygen, carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide is measured. At the entry or exit, a device is located for adjusting the flow cross-section.
