A method for rapidly estimating the total volume of furniture and fittings when moving house simply uses the floor area of the current dwelling and multiplies it by 0.6 meters, being an average height for all furniture, and further multiplies it by a percentage factor representing the occupancy of the floor area. This occupancy is typically 75 % for a normally furnished home and 60 % for a less than normally furnished home. The estimated volume is sufficient to prepare cost estimates for moving the furniture and for preparing the right vehicle for the move.
